“For Je Suis Ohne’s debut music video I wanted to craft something that echoed the personality of a composition that felt dreamy and whimsical. I wanted Steve’s (Je Suis Ohne) exceedingly poor tennis match and the emergence of this fantasy girl (Olerato) to become this bizarre and hypnotic experience that allows viewers to sink into the song. Such a big part of this video was improvising and finding solutions to make this happen without any budget. We got lucky in a lot of ways, we cast Steve’s Mom as Steve’s Mom in the video and she worked perfectly in the part of a smothering maternal presence. We managed to find a way to shoot at the Tennis Club, we didn’t break in I promise. Seeing it empty felt eerie and became the perfect setting for the video. We also had about an hour to shoot all of Olerato’s scenes but she switched it on immediately, and our location, a beautiful, abandoned tennis court, presented its own surreal quality, which fit perfectly with the narrative. It’s a reminder that the realm of music videos is a place that constantly tests your mettle as a filmmaker and offers endless possibilities for experimentation.”
